Vaikunta Ekadashi is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Vishnu during the month of Margazhi (Dec–Jan). It is believed that observing a fast on this day redeems one of sins and grants entry into Vaikuntam, Vishnu's divine abode.
The Origin
According to the Padma Purana, a female power emerged from Vishnu to slay the demon Muran while the Lord rested. Pleased by her victory, Vishnu named her "Ekadasi." She requested a boon that anyone who fasts on this anniversary of her triumph should be liberated from the cycle of rebirth.
